Colleen Currie is a graduate of Gig Harbor High School class of ‘91.
In her time at GHHS, she was involved in debate team, W.A.Y.S. (a service-learning club, Rachel Vaughn´90 was its predecessor/founder), ASB, and any school activity related to changing the world.
She didn’t come from a family with financial security, but she still felt fortunate to be in GHHS. What she remembers best about those years is that she was in a community and at a school where she was learning about so many different issues and was really inspired to make a difference. Additionally, there was support of such opportunities and experiences.
She went on to study Education in Olympia at The Evergreen State College where she met her husband, Ethan. After obtaining her master's in teaching, she and her family moved to Mali in West Africa to serve in the Peace Corps. This experience introduced her to teaching internationally. They moved back to the US at the end of her service and taught for 10 years (5 in Nevada where she had her son, Quinn, and then 5 in Washington on Lopez Island where she had her daughter, Shea).
She has been teaching abroad since 2011: Japan, Cameroon, India and now Malta makes five. Living internationally has allowed her to explore so many of the places she learned about while growing up in Gig Harbor. She expresses how eternally grateful she is to her teachers who brought her the world in the classroom and then inspired her to go out and see it for herself.
